Hitting the Headlines
The biggest and most recent of these headlining instances was the conduct of the GATES PCM Park Preservation Project, in which over 300 foreign employees of GATES PCM Construction Ltd took to East Coast Park and did over 3 hours of cleaning works in order to keep the park clean and green on Sunday, 28th of December 2014.
Director for Branding and Quality at GATES PCM Construction Ltd, Mr Sivanessan said to Channel News Asia: “Most of our foreign employees are veterans in terms of their work in Singapore. Many have been here for 4-6 years. As such, they do feel a sense of belonging to Singapore as their second home. And this is one of the ways in which they can display that.”
The project was given wide scale publicity by the local media, including media giants like, Media-corp and Singapore Press Holdings, and was showcased on Television news platforms like Channel News Asia news bulletins, Channel 5 news and Vasantham news. It was also widely featured in print form through media outlets like The Straits Times, Tamil Murasu and Tabla. The project is also set to be featured, in coming weeks, on Vasantham’s infomercial show: Indian Beat.
The reason for such a press coverage is also apparent as this was the first time a local compan been able to carry out such a large scale corporate social responsibility effort using foreign employees. However, this is by no means a one-off event as the GATES PCM Family has always had a culture of giving back to the community, according to Chairman and CEO of GATES PCM Construction Ltd, Mr. Krishna.
The Brainchild of the Park Preservation Project, said: “We have a tradition of conducting annual large scale projects as part of our ‘GATES Gives’ initiative, which focusses on giving back to the community. Last year’s effort was warmly welcomed, when we involved a fraction of our foreign employees. Therefore, I felt this year, I should give all my foreign employees an opportunity to give back to the country that has given them a better life.”
Just a few months back, before the Hari Raya Festival, the GATES PCM GROUP convened at AI-Khair Mosque in Teck Whye Crescent in order to hand deliver 120 provision hampers, which would last a typical family for a month, to the doorstep of needy Muslim families in the Teck Whye, Choa Chu Kang and Yew Tee areas.
GATES PCM Group also hit the headlines in mid-2014 for its unique take on a Labour Day celebration as it organised its first ever GATES Family Day at Casuarina Grove, East Coast Park. The event was a way of commemorating and appreciating the efforts of these employees, who continue to work tirelessly for the company in their respective projects.
Mr Rajendren, an employee of GATES PCM Construction Ltd, working on the Downtown Line Works Train Project, reflected: “Having worked tirelessly in the tunnels and amidst walls, it gives all of us great pleasure and a peace of mind, to be up and about in the open and having fun like this.”
However, it was not just the company’s giving nature that allowed it to make the news in 2014. In fact, this year, the company also took home the Asia Top 100 Outstanding Enterprises Award in the Platinum Category.
The award was a sign of GATES PCM Construction Ltd reaching a new height of achievement as the award served as the company’s first Asian level award, after Mr Krishna won the Asia-Pacific Entrepreneurship Award’s Outstanding Entrepreneur Award last year.
Yet, beyond just media coverage, these instances in 2014, have been significant building blocks in creating the increased brand presence, market share and sheer recognisability of the company and group. At the same time, they have helped to build a better relationship between the company, its employees and the community at large, thereby cementing the GATES PCM name on the business map.
