Giving Back the GATES Way
GATES PCM Construction Ltd made history on 30th December 2013, when it brought together two major elderly homes for the first time in a festive celebration. The event, involving more than 450 residents from Sree Narayana Mission and SWAMI Home was held at the multi-purpose hall at SWAMI Home, in conjunction with the Christmas and New Year festive period.
The event was one of historic significance for GATES PCM Construction Ltd, as it marked the company’s biggest Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative till date. Yet, more than just history, the event showcased the GATES family’s generosity and its care for the elderly as it provided significant festive giveaways to both homes.
Besides preparing an eventful festive entertainment programme for the residents of the two homes, which served as a true visual feast, GATES PCM Construction Ltd also arranged for a festive lunch for the participants involved in the celebration.
On top of providing the residents with an exciting programme on that day, the GATES family also gave out goodie bags to each resident, filled with essential items of more long term use. One such item was a fresh supply of pyjamas that was given to all participants in the celebration. To top off the entire giveaway package, GATES PCM Construction Ltd also donated equipment in the form of wheelchairs to both homes.
‘When giving to charity and the less fortunate in society, one has to give with an open-heart. Therefore, no expense has been spared in giving the elderly in these homes an enjoyable programme, as such an initiative is not just about sharing our wealth with others but also ensuring that at the end of the day, the people that we care for here, feel special and have fun,” said FOUNDER & CEO of GATES PCM Construction Ltd, Mr Krishna, who was the brains behind this initiative.
More than just creating a personal connection between the GATES family and the residents of the two homes, GATES PCM Construction Ltd and its management made it a point to serve as an example for fellow SMEs and their owners. Therefore, many friends of GATES PCM Construction Ltd, including owners of SMEs were invited to join in the celebration and give back to the community so as to inspire them to continue such efforts on their own.

GATES PCM Construction Ltd has taken its first step in breaking into the regional market, by tying up with COLAS RAIL ASIA for a project on the Kelana Jaya Line in Kuala Lumpur (KU Malaysia.
Branding Consultant or GATES PCM Construction Ltd, Mr Sivanessan, said: “SMEs generally tend not to get involved in CSR activities of such scale on a regular basis. But at GATES PCM Construction Ltd, we felt that this paradigm should change. And if we want to see this change, we have to be the agents of it.”
However, GATES PCM Construction Ltd’s efforts to effect change within the community did not stop there. In fact, the company’s most significant effort to effect change through this initiative, was the opportunity that it gave its foreign workers to do their part for this event. While these foreign workers were essential in the preparation work for the event, such as buying and packing of goodies bags and transporting equipment to the event, their role did not end there.
The management of GATES PCM Construction Ltd also gave these foreign workers the chance to directly serve the residents of the homes, much to the appraisal of local media outlet, Tamil Murasu. The Tamil daily featured a story on GATES PCM Construction Ltd’s foreign workers the next day as a way of extending the GATES family’s intention of inspiring other foreign workers and their employers to do such community outreach as well.
And the efforts of the company truly paid off when its foreign workers served whole-heartedly. Mr. Kaleeswaran Udaiyar, Supervisor at GATES PCM Construction Ltd, was quoted by Tamil Murasu when he said: “Serving the elderly gave me a personal sense of satisfaction. As I have been away from my parents for some years now, whenever I served the elderly residents, I felt the sensation and emotion of serving my own parents.”
It is without doubt that this emotionality and inspiration will continue to fuel GATES PCM Construction Ltd’s continued community outreach efforts and that the company will continue to be a role model for others to follow.
