First Regional Award for Gates
Gates PCM Construction Ltd hit the big one last August winning its first ever regional entrepreneurship award when its CEO and Founder was awarded the Asia-Pacific Entrepreneurship Awards (APEA) 2013′s Outstanding Entrepreneur Award at a gala dinner and awards ceremony at the Hibiscus Ballroom at Marina Bay Sands, Singapore.
APEA is organised by Enterprise Asia, a non-governmental organisation. Said to be the most prestigious recognition program for enterprises in the region, APEA aims to enhance the awareness of the importance of entrepreneurship amongst the general public and in turn, stimulate the growth of local and regional brands and enterprises both locally and regionally.
Over the last few years, it has been recognizing and appreciating outstanding as well as promising entrepreneurs from all over the region. And this 5th installment of the award presentation in Singapore was heavily contested by entrepreneurs from all over the island, from various industries.
Over 80 entrepreneurs submitted nominations for this year’s APEA. And these nominees were put through an arduous selection process. After screening and audit verification of all nominations the field of participants was nearly halved. These selected candidates then went through individual interviews and reports from these interviews were once again submitted to the judging panel in order for them to make the final decision on the award winners.
Mr. Sivanessan, Branding Consultant for Gates PCM Construction, said, “It was a challenging process and at each stage, there was a bit of uncertainty. But it was the belief in Mr. Krishna’s credentials and the company’s status that allowed us to emerge on tops.” Eventually only 6 candidates bagged the coveted outstanding entrepreneur award and Mr Krishna was a one of the six proud, triumphant recipients on stage that day.
While this was not the first award victory for Gates PCM Construction Ltd, which had previously won the Singapore Brands Award in 2011 and the Singapore Excellence Award in 2012, it was by no doubt the biggest. Even its CEO and Founder Mr. Krishna, who won the Successful Entrepreneur Award in 2011, felt that the APEA win has put the company on a whole new playing field. “This is a true milestone achievement for me and my company. It is one that sets us apart from our competitors and is a clear indication of just how far we have come in such a short time” said the delighted 56-year-old.
And for him, this award could not have come at a better time. Mr Krishna was, in early 2013, considering semi-retirement or complete retirement in the foreseeable future. But according to him, this win was so immense that it has changed everything. Mr Krishna announced, “This award has further ignited my spirit and renewed my motivation to bring my company to even greater heights and to give back to the community.”
The award could not have come at a better time for Gates PCM Construction Ltd as well, which is currently looking to rebrand itself as a full-fledged railway company. After years of working as sub-contractors for railway giants, the management felt that the company was ready to move to the next level by taking on railway projects directly. And according to Chief Operations Officer of Gates PCM Construction Ltd, Mr Thanaraj, the award was a clear indication that the company was able and ready for such a move.
“Looking at the names of past winners who had won this award over the last five years, I am thrilled that our CEO and Founder Mr. Krishna and our company have now joined this elite group of companies,” said the 33-year old, who is the youngest member of the top brass of management in Gates PCM Construction Ltd.
However, he is not the only one who has been inspired by this win. Avun Mohamed, Computer Systems Administrator at Gates PCM Construction Ltd, had this to say about his CEO’s win. “Having seen my boss in action, the way he conducts his business and the sharpness of his entrepreneurial skills, I am truly at awe. I feel that he is deserving of many more of such awards. I and all my colleagues truly hope that he eventually does go on to achieve these awards because he is deserving of such recognition,” said the enthusiastic 26 year-old.
Having seen the effect of such an emphatic award attainment amidst its staff and stakeholders, the management of Gates PCM Construction Ltd has targeted that it will attempt to win at least one award per year from 2014 onwards.
